treloar's sketch landscape masterplan
Treloar’s new home offers specialist education facilities for students with complex learning difficulties and physical disabilities but lacks the lived-in feel and range of outdoor spaces at the school’s former site.
fabrik’s challenge was to develop a landscape sketch masterplan to guide future site development. This needed to emulate the personal touches and liveability of their previous home and offer a range of exciting, diverse spaces to learn, socialise and relax in.
An elevated walkway is proposed within the school square, providing a sense of achievement for students through a range of challenges. An arena will also be created to host major school events such as the end of year ceremony.
A pond surrounded by rustling reeds, a tree house with elevated walkways and campfires are some of the stimulating features suggested within the sensory gardens. These will form part of naturalistic environments designed for relaxation and adventurous play.
Teaching spaces spill out into coloured and vibrant outdoor educational spaces, whilst moveable educational ‘pods’ and partitions provide flexibility beneath the shelter of large shade sails.
A wheelchair track is incorporated within the connectivity spaces, allowing students to develop their skills as they move around the site. The green core also offers routes to explore, including a wildflower meadow, lookouts, lights and areas to socialise along its length.
External living spaces provide age-specific areas for students and staff to enjoy during and out of school hours. These include flexible dining areas, productive walls, retractable awnings, digital multi-media panels and a place to exhibit student’s work. ‘Alice and Wonderland’ social spaces have enlarged features, nooks and mounding to shelter and gather.
Privacy, independence, challenges, interaction, contact with nature, relaxation, exploration and most importantly fun have been packed with abundance into the proposed sketch masterplan to help students achieve and enjoy their full potential.
