Student engagements and workshops are key to our approach of drawing out the true needs of each school we work with. When working with primary and secondary school pupils we use pre-prepared workbooks to take the students through the design of a part of their school's external space. The chosen space is based on either the specialism or an area of external space identified in the brief.
We work through an understanding of the current site, and what the students like and do not like. We consider the elements that might be included in, for instance, a science garden or a performing arts amphitheatre. We get the pupils to start drawing what they would like to see incorporating these elements. Lots of pens, lots of sketching and lots of colour later we ask the students to stand up and articulate their scheme to the rest of the group. We also make models with the pupils. We then take their designs and incorporate them into the final design we produce for the landscape masterplan.
