play space design winners

11 February 2014

Pupils of Harestock Primary School eagerly gathered at a special presentation assembly today to hear which of their teams had won the Barton Farm Play Space Design Competition.

Judges Councillor Jamie Scott of Winchester City Council, Caroline Green and Robert Westwood of CALA Homes, and Charlie Peck of fabrik Landscape Architects were delighted to announce the BEST DESIGNERS team as the overall winner.

BEST DESIGNERS - Freddy , Shannon M, Brynee
The winning entry included a pirate ship, slides on mounds, lights in the trees and a stepping stone route. The judges selected the scheme for its strong design theme, clear layout and wayfinding throughout the play space. Proposals also considered the arrangement of play equipment and explored the use of landform.

CALA Homes presented prizes to BEST DESIGNERS and three class winning teams:

THE AWESOMES - Chloe, Holly, Kirsten and Matthew

TEAM GREEN – Lewis, Rachael, Charlotte, Ella and Jake

TEAM STARS – Emily, Elinor, Megan and Shannon D

fabrik Landscape Architect, Charlie Peck comments ‘The competition was a fun and exciting way to involve local children in the design of a play space in the nearby residential development. The pupils at Harestock Primary School came up with lots of creative ideas and produced excellent sketches and models to showcase their perfect playgrounds.’

Play space design models and pupil investigation

The judges were impressed by the student’s inventive ideas for their ideal play space, and thoroughly entertained by features such as ‘death slides’, ‘crocodile climbing frames’ and ‘coffee shops’ for Mums and Dads! All pupils were presented with certificates.

Winning design ideas will now be developed by CALA Homes, Landscape Architects fabrik and a play manufacturer, in conjunction with the Council, to create a fabulous new play area at Barton Farm.
