proposals for smith's dock approved

08 January 2015

The redevelopment of Smith’s Dock in North Shields, has gained planning permission for phase one.

Regeneration proposals, through creative place making, transform the derelict docklands into new homes and public open space, creating a destination for local people to live, work and socialise. The waterfront forms the heart of the scheme, with an integrated cycle route and trim trail along the promenade. New leisure uses, including floating dining, and a waterside park accommodating recreational trails and pontoons, are introduced within the ecological and active docks.

fabrik developed the public realm strategy and design, which include a new waterside promenade, dockside, green streets, an orchard and public open space. Proposals breathe new life into the historic docklands and link to the existing marina and Fish Quay.

fabrik worked in collaboration with architects shedkm and Ian Simpson Architects to develop the scheme for Urban Splash and Places for People.
