st bernards hospital, london
A healthcare masterplan providing modern, fit-for-purpose environments for patients, staff and visitors, within the historic setting of St Bernard’s Hospital. The hospital is the largest provider of specialist forensic mental health services in London.
Outdoor space has the potential to play a crucial role in the success of therapeutic environments. It contributes to a calming atmosphere, and provides non-clinical places and spaces where patients have a sense of control, and can enjoy nature and the company of others. The landscape concept for St. Bernard’s Hospital is based on this approach to help patient recovery.
We are creating a central green space at the heart of the hospital grounds which offers opportunities for interaction with nature through the use of horticultural therapy. This is achieved within a wider accessible and legible landscape for all, which has a coherent site identity and respects the history and heritage of the site.
